Independence and Self-care

For a child, independence means to be self-reliant and able to do things on their own without needing help from others. Self-care tasks are the daily tasks required each day for a child to be ready to participate in their day such as dressing, toileting, brushing their teeth, and eating. As a child grows, they learn essential life skills, build confidence, and rely less and less on their parents for support. They do this by fostering self-care and independence.

There are many reasons why a child might not have acquired a self-skill within an expected age range or be having difficulty with independence. When they do, this can be limiting for other skills and experiences. Our OT’s will work collaboratively with you to identify the skills requiring support, clarify where the breakdown lies and then provide intervention to suit your unique circumstances and child so they can achieve success in that task and lead their fullest life.
