Autism Diagnostic Assessment

Is your child showing early characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)? You can reach out to us to discuss an Autism Diagnostic Assessment.

What is ASD and is an Autism Diagnostic Assessment?

ASD is a developmental disorder. It can affect a person’s communication skills, behaviour and ability to function in various social environments. Autism Spectrum Disorder, exists on a spectrum. Meaning that each person with ASD experiences a different set of characteristics. Some traits may include:

  • Avoidance of or irregular eye contact.
  • Difficultly speaking with others or maintaining conversation.
  • Restricted awareness of social cues.
  • Difficulty understanding the moods, actions, feelings or behaviour of others.
  • An intense or excessive interest in very specific topics
  • Repetitious behaviour.
  • Other developmental issues.

An Autism Diagnostic Assessments can determine whether your child has ASD. We conduct these assessments at our Shenton Park clinic, within Perth WA.

How does my child receive an Autism Diagnosis?

In Perth, Western Australia, the first step is to ensure you have a referral from your paediatrician.

From there, diagnosing ASD involves assessments from three specialists trained in The Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS):

  • A Paediatrician,
  • A Psychologist,
  • A Speech Pathologist.

At Kid Speak Perth, we provide the Speech Pathology component of this assessment. This is separated into two assessment sessions. First, we complete a structured interview with parents or caregivers. Following the parent interview, a Speech Pathologist will work with your child to complete the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). This is considered the ‘Gold Standard’ ASD assessment tool. Once we have completed the assessment, parents will receive a report and an option feedback session with the assessing Speech Pathologist.
