Early Intervention

Every child develops differently and it can be hard to know what’s “normal” when it comes to your child’s speech and language development.

Therefore, if your child is showing signs of speech and language delay, you may start to wonder: Is this a phase? Will they grow out of it? Am I worried and overthinking?

Most of the time, your concerns may enough of a sign to contact a Speech Pathologist for an assessment, to ensure your child is meeting their communication milestones. Research shows that early intervention is vital for children with communication delays. At Kid Speak Perth, early intervention is the foundation of everything we do.

But why is early intervention so important?

The first 1,000 days of life are critical to your child’s brain development. Their brain is more “plastic” (i.e. neuroplastic) than ever. This means it:

  • Wires according to the information it receives,
  • Can easily form and reform new neural pathways,
  • Can lay the foundations for your child’s lifelong growth and
    neurodevelopment.

This period is essential for the development of speech and language. This
is because their brain is undergoing a period where it can easily absorb and retain information. That is how your child can learn so many new skills in their first few years of life.

Between the age of two and three, the brain has up to twice as many synapses as it will have in adulthood. These synapses connect neurons in the brain to neurons in the rest of the body. Around age three, the brain undergoes synaptic “pruning”. This means it prunes away the neurons and synapses it hasn’t used yet.

Once this has happened, the neuroplasticity of your child’s brain decreases. While it’s still possible, it becomes harder for them to learn and retain new information.

Delayed intervention can:

  • Make it hard for your child to interact with peers,
  • Cause behavioural problems,
  • Reduce their confidence and self esteem
  • Cause them to fall behind academically,
  • Make it harder to catch up academically.

Are you concerned about your child’s speech and language development? Reach out to Kid Speak Perth for an assessment and start seeing the benefits of early intervention.

The earlier you intervene, the more your child will gain from that intervention therapy. Early intervention also positively impacts other development areas, including:

  • Attention,
  • Motivation,
  • Goal-directed behaviour,
  • And much more.
