Functional reading and/or writing difficulties may indicate the presence of a specific learning disorder (SLD), formerly known as dyslexia (difficulties reading) and dysgraphia (difficulties writing). For children with possible SLD it is recommended that targeted therapy using evidence-based intervention techniques (including a structured synthetic phonics program) is provided for a period of time, equivalent to 6 months of weekly support. If, after an appropriate amount of intervention has been provided, difficulties persist, children can be assessed by an Educational Psychologist to determine whether they meet the criteria for a Specific Learning Disorder (SLD).
